An important law for gay travels to know about is that the Sharia prohibits sodomy. Homosexual relationships are generally not disclosed while in the UAE. Although the UAE are less strict about the punishment for homosexuality than many of the neighboring Arab countries, life imprisonment and the death penalty are sometimes enforced. Other punishments include fines, jail time, and even mandatory hormone treatments or chemical castration. Most foreigners convicted of sodomy are deported.

The uae penal code, Article 354 states, “Whoever commits rape on a female or sodomy with a male shall be punished by death.” Sharia law and the laws of each Emirate may also be used to punish people for homosexuality.

Homosexuals and gender identity issues are taboo topics throughout the Emirates. If they are discussed at all, it is generally in negative ways, such as the discussion of homosexuals causing disease and committing sex crimes such as rape. Depictions and discussions of homosexuality in the UAE almost always involve foreigners rather than native Arabs.
